For Quality Metal in Permafrost, check the Makeshift Smelter or Professional Smelter recipes available in your world. The Makeshift route produces one Quality Metal from 5 Iron and 5 Scrap; the Professional route produces one from 2 Iron Ingots and 2 Scrap. Each route requires its recipe and station to be available before you can use it.
A guaranteed fixed Quality Metal pickup location is not confirmed here. Metal Junk is also a different material: it supplies Scrap through dismantling, rather than being a Quality Metal pickup. Use the smelting route you can actually access instead of following a map of salvage as though it were an advanced-metal route.
For the Scrap input, see collecting Metal Junk and making Scrap.

Identify the exact material
Read the ingredient name in the target recipe. Do not identify the required material only from its metallic appearance. The useful distinctions are:
| Item name | Role in this chain |
|---|---|
| Metal Junk | Salvage that can be broken down into Scrap |
| Scrap | Input used by the Quality Metal recipes |
| Iron | Input for the Makeshift Smelter route |
| Iron Ingot | Processed input for the Professional Smelter route |
| Quality Metal | Output that the advanced target recipe requests |

Match the Quality Metal ingredient name before choosing a smelting recipe.
Iron and Iron Ingot must also remain distinct. Carrying two Iron does not fulfil a recipe asking for two Iron Ingots. Check the live ingredient names before you begin a material run or move supplies from storage.
Choose the available smelting recipe
The two recipes use different inputs and stations:
| Station | Ingredients for one craft | Output | Craft time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makeshift Smelter | 5 Iron, 5 Scrap | 1 Quality Metal | 20 seconds |
| Professional Smelter | 2 Iron Ingots, 2 Scrap | 1 Quality Metal | 10 seconds |
Check which recipe is learned and which station you have access to. A shorter crafting timer does not make the second route the best next step when you lack its station or ingots. The useful route is the one that connects the resources you can obtain to the material you need.
Check the recipe and station entries shown by your installed build. The cited data does not establish a current one-point unlock for each recipe. Confirm that the required recipe is available rather than assuming that access to a station teaches every output.
Do not infer a complete quest route from these costs. A current named story prerequisite or guaranteed station placement recipe is not established here. If the relevant entry is inaccessible in your game, keep that condition separate from the material quantities in the table.
Prepare the input for your chosen route
For the Makeshift Smelter, set aside Iron and Scrap in the displayed amounts. The Scrap should be the finished dismantling output, not Metal Junk waiting to be processed. If you collected salvage, complete that conversion before treating the Quality Metal ingredients as ready.
For the Professional Smelter, set aside Iron Ingots and Scrap. If you have Iron instead of the required ingots, finish the intervening smelting work first. Do not queue a different ingot recipe solely because its name or icon looks similar.
Carry the ingredients yourself when using the station. Materials held in storage are different from the materials available to the recipe in your inventory. Check that condition before gathering a second batch for a recipe that still shows a shortage.
Scale the batch from the actual output
Each recipe produces one Quality Metal per craft. For two crafts at the Makeshift Smelter, the recipe amounts double to ten Iron and ten Scrap. For two at the Professional Smelter, they double to four Iron Ingots and four Scrap.
This is a recipe calculation, not a guarantee of what you will find in a container. Choose the number of crafts from the target item's requirement and the available inputs. If you only need one Quality Metal, there is no reason to prepare a larger batch merely because another recipe needs more.
Verify the output before using the next recipe
When the craft completes, check the produced item's name and quantity. The material milestone is Quality Metal available to carry into the next recipe. A finished timer for Iron Ingot or another resource does not establish that you produced Quality Metal.
Keep the finished material for the upgrade or clothing item that prompted the search. Advanced recipes can compete for the same supply, so read the target's quantity before spending the output on an optional lamp, trap, or unrelated craft.
If the target recipe still reports a shortage, check the amount and location of the finished material before repeating smelting. You may have made the right item but stored it elsewhere, or made one craft when the next recipe requires several.
Treat traders and crates as checks, not fixed routes
No current guaranteed vendor stock, container drop rate, or named fixed pickup is established here. If you are already visiting a trader, checking the visible stock for the exact item is useful. It is not a confirmed reason to make a long trip expecting a purchase.
Similarly, a better-looking crate does not promise Quality Metal. One container's empty result does not prove that your world lacks the material, and a map label does not establish a replenishment timer. Avoid repeatedly visiting the same pickup on an assumed respawn schedule.
A Quality Metal location search is complete only when you identify a real source you can use. Until a fixed pickup is verified, the available smelting recipes give you a clearer preparation path: confirm the unlock, choose the station, gather the exact input, and check the finished output.
