Unlock the Tanning Rack building blueprint for 2 blueprint points, then use the Building Tool to place it from the Utilities tab in Permafrost. The rack turns animal pelts and Animal Fat into Treated Hide, which you need for clothing at the Tailoring Bench.
Unlocking the building, supplying a tanning recipe, and collecting the finished hide are separate steps. Completed hides hang on the rack; they do not automatically appear in your inventory. Pick them up before returning to the clothing station.

Unlock and place the production station
Find the Tanning Rack entry in the Blueprints tab and check its listed cost. Hold the entry to spend the required points. After the building blueprint is learned, equip the Building Tool, open the Utilities section, and select the rack for placement.
Use the build requirements shown in your game when collecting construction materials. A current placement-material shopping list is not confirmed here, so do not substitute an older cost merely because the station name matches.
Choose a convenient position near your Tailoring Bench if you already have that station. The workflow runs from pelts and fat at the rack to Treated Hide in your inventory, then to clothing at the tailoring station. Keeping those two stations close reduces the need to move materials around while you are finishing a garment.
If the rack is still missing from Utilities, return to its blueprint and confirm that you completed the unlock. If it appears but placement fails, inspect the displayed construction requirement instead of spending another set of points on a different station.
Choose a recipe that matches the pelts you carry
The rack has animal-specific Treated Hide recipes. Use the recipe for the pelt in your inventory. A Moose Pelt does not fulfil a recipe that specifically asks for a Deer Pelt, even though both recipes produce Treated Hide.
The recipe amounts are:
| Treated Hide recipe | Pelts for one craft | Animal Fat for one craft |
|---|---|---|
| Bear | 1 Bear Pelt | 2 |
| Bison | 1 Bison Pelt | 2 |
| Boar | 1 Boar Pelt | 2 |
| Deer | 1 Deer Pelt | 2 |
| Fox | 1 Fox Pelt | 2 |
| Hare | 2 Hare or Rabbit Pelts | 2 |
| Moose | 1 Moose Pelt | 2 |
| Muskox | 1 Muskox Pelt | 2 |
| Wolf | 1 Wolf Pelt | 2 |
Each craft produces one Treated Hide. Most recipes consume one pelt; Hare is the important exception because it consumes two. Every row still needs two Animal Fat for the craft.

Select the recipe for the pelts you carry.
Check that the selected Treated Hide recipe is available in your installed build. The cited recipe list does not establish an additional blueprint-point cost for each animal recipe. Access to the rack does not justify assuming that every displayed recipe can already be used.
Plan fat for the batch
For ten one-pelt crafts, bring ten matching pelts and twenty Animal Fat. The calculation follows the recipe rather than a general rule about carcasses: two fat for each craft you intend to queue.
For Hare, count crafts rather than loose pelts. Ten Hare or Rabbit Pelts cover five crafts when each craft needs two pelts, and those five crafts need ten Animal Fat. Check the selected recipe and quantity before pressing Craft so you do not plan twice as much hide as those pelts can produce.
Animal carcasses can supply fat as well as other hunting materials. Take the fat you need from storage before using the rack; the materials for the queued recipe need to be carried with you.
Queue the batch and collect the hides
Aim at the placed rack and open it through the Tanning Rack interaction. Find the animal-specific recipe for your materials. Check its required ingredients, then adjust the craft quantity with the available quantity controls.
When you select Craft, the materials leave your inventory and the batch enters the queue. That change is expected. Do not immediately gather a second batch because the input disappeared; first check the queue and the completed output.
Once the batch is complete:
- Exit the rack's recipe menu.
- Face the hides hanging on the rack.
- Use the Treated Hide / Press F Pick up prompt.
- Continue collecting until you have taken the finished hides.
- Check your inventory before returning to tailoring.

Pick up the completed hides from the rack before returning to tailoring.
The pickup is the last step in the production process. A completed queue without inventory output can be normal here because the crafted hides are waiting on the physical rack. Look for those hides before treating the craft as lost.
Make Cloth without consuming your clothing reserve
The Tanning Rack also has a Cloth recipe: 1 Treated Hide produces 3 Cloth. This is useful when your clothing recipe is short on Cloth, but it consumes hide that could have been used directly in that garment.
Check both ingredient totals before converting. If you need Treated Hide and Cloth for the same clothing piece, set aside the hide requirement first. Converting all available hide to Cloth can resolve one missing ingredient while creating another.
Select the Cloth recipe if it is available and check the conversion shown before crafting. The cited data lists a separate recipe row; it does not establish an extra point purchase or quest requirement for learning Cloth in the current release.
Move from the rack to the Tailoring Bench
The rack produces materials; the Tailoring Bench produces the clothing. A finished Treated Hide hanging on the rack has not yet supplied the tailoring recipe, and a hide stored in a nearby crate has not necessarily supplied your own inventory either.
For the full Hybrid set, the material totals are 36 Cloth and 17 Treated Hide. Those totals show why it helps to check the planned clothing work before converting hides to Cloth. Keep the required ingredients with you when opening the Tailoring Bench.
The Hybrid clothing recipes are obtained through Anna's quest reward during Breaking the Radio Silence. The Tailoring Bench comes through earlier progression. If the garment recipe is absent at that station, unlocking another rack is not the fix; check whether you claimed and learned the relevant clothing recipes.
Use bought hide when it resolves the bottleneck
If you have the clothing recipe and station but lack enough hunting material, buying Treated Hide can be an alternative. The Mule offers Treated Hide. Check his actual stock and price before planning a purchase, especially if you only need a few pieces to complete a garment.
Buying completed hide bypasses the tanning input for that amount. It does not unlock the Tanning Rack, teach a missing clothing recipe, or provide a missing Tailoring Bench. Choose the option according to the condition that is blocking you.
Check the failed stage before repeating the craft
| Problem | Check this stage |
|---|---|
| Rack does not appear in the building selection | Confirm its building blueprint is learned |
| Rack appears but cannot be placed | Read its current placement requirements |
| A Treated Hide recipe will not craft | Check that recipe's unlock, pelt type, fat, and quantity |
| Materials disappeared after queuing | Inspect the queue before gathering replacements |
| Queue finished but no hide is in inventory | Pick up the finished hide from the rack |
| Tailoring still shows missing material | Carry the collected hides and Cloth yourself |
| Cloth is sufficient but hide is now short | Check how much hide you converted to Cloth |
Finish one complete cycle before scaling up: unlock, place, supply, queue, collect, and confirm the output in your inventory. That first completed Treated Hide proves the part of the clothing chain the Tanning Rack is meant to provide.
