A basic Iron Pickaxe cannot mine Moonstone in Permafrost. Its description is misleading: the required tool is a Quality Iron Pickaxe. If you upgraded to ordinary iron because the tooltip promised access to the resource, the failure is consistent with the current tool requirement.
Check the full name of the equipped tool before spending more materials or treating the node as broken. This is a distinction between two pickaxes, not a reason to keep hitting the same deposit with the basic version.
Data version: Numerical recipe or quest entries from MetaBot use its 0.44.2.4634-milestone export. This is a source reference, not confirmation that every entry remains available after later patches.
Confirm the tool before testing the deposit

Inventory layout reference: the displayed tooltip is a heater. Use the item-name area to inspect your own pickaxe; this image does not prove its identity or recipe.
Open your inventory and inspect the pickaxe you actually have equipped. The word Quality matters. A tool named Iron Pickaxe does not meet the confirmed Moonstone requirement just because it contains iron in its name.
Use this short check at the deposit:
- Read the equipped pickaxe's complete item name.
- If it is the basic Iron Pickaxe, stop the mining attempt and work toward the Quality Iron Pickaxe.
- If it is the Quality Iron Pickaxe, confirm that this is the tool you are using for the next attempt.
- Check the resource interaction again and distinguish an unmet tool requirement from an attempt that now works.

This is the ordinary Iron Pickaxe. Moonstone requires the Quality Iron Pickaxe instead.
The basic tool's item description is the source of the confusion. Recrafting another ordinary Iron Pickaxe gives you another copy of the same tier; it does not satisfy the requirement for the Quality version. Likewise, the general idea that iron is a higher tier than your earlier equipment is not enough to identify which iron tool the deposit accepts.
Read the result as a tier check
The useful comparison is simple:
| Equipped tool | Meaning at a Moonstone deposit |
|---|---|
| Basic Iron Pickaxe | Does not satisfy the confirmed requirement |
| Quality Iron Pickaxe | Meets the confirmed tool requirement |
| An item whose complete name you have not checked | Confirm the name before diagnosing the deposit |
A failed attempt with the first tool does not establish that the resource is bugged. It also does not establish that the game expects you to reset your world, advance a particular quest, or use a different mouse button. The confirmed correction is the tool tier.
Treat the tool requirement and the crafting route as separate decisions. This page identifies the reason ordinary iron fails. It does not supply an unverified Quality Iron Pickaxe recipe, blueprint reward, workstation requirement, or material count. Check the recipe currently available in your game before gathering for that upgrade.
When the Quality Iron Pickaxe still fails
If the exact required pickaxe is equipped and the deposit still refuses the attempt, you have moved beyond the basic description issue. Record the resource name, the tool name, and the message shown during the failed interaction. A screenshot containing both the interaction and your equipped tool is more useful than a description such as “iron does not work.”
Do not turn an unexplained second failure into a new universal requirement. No additional Moonstone quest gate or alternate mining recipe is established here. Avoid destructive experiments such as restarting the world merely to investigate one resource interaction.
If you compare the same attempt after updating or reloading, keep the tool and deposit consistent so you can tell which condition changed. The practical success check is obtaining the resource with the required pickaxe; a changed tooltip alone does not prove that mining succeeded.
Keep the next trip focused
Before returning to the deposit, verify that the upgrade has produced the Quality Iron Pickaxe and that you have equipped it. Carrying the right item while continuing to use the old one leaves the original problem unchanged.
Moonstone is an advanced resource. You can leave a deposit for a later trip without assuming that your world is missing content. The immediate task is to correct the tool mismatch, then retest the resource once, rather than spend the journey repeatedly trying the ordinary iron tool.

- Known Issues & Workarounds (Updated October 11) — Developer issue post. Scope: The incorrect basic Iron Pickaxe tooltip and Quality Iron Pickaxe requirement for Moonstone.
- Quality Pickaxe – Damage, Tier & Recipe (Permafrost) — Extracted game data. Scope: Older data labels Quality Pickaxe as Quality metal tier and distinguishes it from lower tools; this is a naming/version boundary, not proof this equals the current developer term Quality Iron Pickaxe..
MetaBot recipe and quest data is attributed to 0.44.2.4634-milestone (Steam build 25834606). It describes that dataset; availability and requirements after later patches still need to be checked in your game.
The secondary tool name is not established as an alias of Quality Iron Pickaxe. Use it only for the explicit version/name caveat; no recipe or price copied from it.
