To get metal scrap in Permafrost, collect Metal Junk and break it down at a Dismantling Workbench. The material you are looking for is labelled Scrap. An item description saying it can be broken down does not give you an inventory dismantling action; you need the station.
If you have not unlocked your own bench, use the existing one inside the Church. The fastest useful next step is therefore different depending on your inventory: collect salvage if you have none, or go to the bench if you are already carrying it.
Turn salvage into the ingredient you need
Keep the input and output names separate. Metal Junk is a pile of discarded metal parts. Scrap is the material obtained by breaking it down. Carrying the input can feel like you have already finished gathering, but a recipe asking for Scrap still needs the processed result.
Use this sequence:
- Check that the target crafting recipe asks for Scrap.
- Collect Metal Junk or another item whose description identifies the relevant dismantling output.
- Carry that item to a Dismantling Workbench.
- Use the station to break down the salvage and check the resulting material.
- Return to the target recipe with Scrap in your own inventory.

Metal Junk is the salvage input; obtain Scrap by dismantling it.
The exact yield per salvage item is not established here. Plan around the output shown at the station rather than assuming that every object gives the same amount. A description mentioning Cloth or another material is also not a promise that the item yields metal Scrap.
Search the places that hold Metal Junk
You can find Metal Junk as loose salvage and inside containers. The useful place clusters include Promenade at House Camp and the Greenhouse, while smaller pickups are listed around the Church and Water Tower.
Choose a place that fits your current route. A small nearby pickup that you can bring straight to the Church bench may be more useful than a larger distant cluster when you only need to finish one early recipe. The larger clusters are useful to check when you already need to visit those areas.
| Place | Reason to check it |
|---|---|
| Promenade at House Camp | A concentration of loose Metal Junk pickups |
| Greenhouse | Another concentration of loose Metal Junk |
| Church | A smaller pickup area with a dismantling bench available inside |
| Water Tower | A smaller loose-salvage area to check during an existing visit |
These are search areas, not guaranteed replenishing piles. A list of map pickups does not establish when those items respawn or what remains available after you have already collected them in your world. Avoid planning an unlimited farming loop around a pickup you emptied earlier.
Check containers while passing through
Metal Junk can also appear in ordinary scavenging containers. Relevant types include bins, carts of trash, frozen bodies, lockers, office cabinets, toolboxes, safes, crates, trash cans, and trash piles.
Check the containers on the route you are already using rather than treating a container type as a guaranteed drop. If one does not contain Metal Junk, move on to the next accessible source; the empty result is not evidence that dismantling is unavailable.
Safes and other locked containers add a separate access problem. Do not make the entire Scrap run depend on a container you cannot currently open. Loose salvage and accessible containers give you other ways to gather the input.
Use a purchase only when the stock is available
Eric Hirsch is listed as a seller of Metal Junk. If you are already visiting him, inspect his stock for the exact item before choosing between buying and scavenging.
Do not confuse a Metal Junk purchase with a Scrap purchase. Buying the salvage still leaves the dismantling step. No guaranteed current stock amount or replenishment schedule is established here, so a vendor visit should not replace checking what you can actually obtain.
Use the Church bench when you cannot build one
The existing dismantling bench inside the Church lets you use salvage before you have your own station. The buildable bench is associated with quest progression, but a precise current unlock quest is not confirmed here.
There is no need to wait for an unverified recipe route when the shared station is accessible. Take the Metal Junk you already have, find the Church's dismantling bench, and check its available dismantling action.
If you arrive without the salvage, you have reached the correct station but have not supplied its input. If you arrive with salvage whose description promises a different material, check the output before consuming it. Those are gathering or input-selection problems, not reasons to rebuild the bench.
The Church's exact indoor bench position is not pinned to a verified coordinate here. Identify the station from its interaction or name instead of assuming every workbench in the building performs dismantling.
Carry the finished Scrap back to crafting
Crafting uses materials you carry. Scrap placed in a nearby crate or left in the dog's inventory is not the same as Scrap ready in your own inventory for the recipe. Retrieve the required amount before returning to the crafting station.
This is an easy place to misdiagnose the process: you can have successfully dismantled the salvage, stored the output safely, and still see missing materials in the recipe. Check where the finished Scrap is held before collecting more Metal Junk.
Use storage for the excess, but keep the amount required by the current recipe on you. There is no confirmed need to carry every piece of salvage from the trip while crafting. Returning with the processed ingredient keeps your immediate crafting check straightforward.
Resolve the common dead ends
| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| The item says it can be broken down, but there is no inventory action | Bring it to a dismantling bench |
| You have Metal Junk but the recipe still needs Scrap | Complete the dismantling step |
| The bench is not available to build | Use the existing Church station if accessible |
| A salvage item produces another material | Check its description and output before using more |
| You have Scrap in storage but the recipe reports none | Move the ingredient into your own inventory |
| A search area is empty after you looted it | Check another source instead of assuming a respawn timer |
The practical completion check is the crafting recipe recognising the Scrap you carry. Finding a pile of Metal Junk is the gathering milestone; converting it at the bench is what turns that find into the requested ingredient.
