If your Permafrost church roof key is missing, first check your inventory and Anna's quest reward box inside the Church at House Camp. Take Key from Anna individually when it is present. If the key is absent from both places, the current quest update lets you speak to Anna to receive a replacement. Equip the key before using the locked rooftop door, and keep it away from other containers until that door is open.
The key belongs to Breaking the Radio Silence. It is not a loose item you need to find somewhere on the snowy roof. Anna provides it through the reward interaction after you speak with her about the church's communication equipment. A key that disappears after successfully unlocking the rooftop door has been consumed by that action; that is different from a missing key while the door remains locked.
Match the key to the active church objective
Open the Journal and read the current Breaking the Radio Silence objective. The relevant early steps are talking to Anna, getting the key to the church tower, repairing access to the roof, and reaching the roof. Checking the objective first keeps you from searching for a reward that the conversation has not yet offered.
Anna is inside the Church at House Camp. Speak with her about fixing the radio tower and finish the available quest conversation. The objective should move from talking to her toward collecting the tower key. Look for the Quest reward box associated with this conversation, then inspect its contents.

The first key reward includes Key from Anna and 20 Bucks. It is separate from a later reward interaction that provides the Mountain Backpack and Hybrid clothing recipes after the radio work. If you already see the clothing reward, you are at a different stage from the initial roof-key pickup.
Do not treat every key connected with Anna or House Camp as interchangeable. This door calls for Key from Anna. Sean's key from the Lost Connection side quest opens a different stash in Sean's house, and that quest's rooftop route is also separate from the Church. Searching its tape trail does not recover the church tower key.
Use the name on the item and the current Journal objective together. A map marker may point toward the overall church task while your missing action is still the reward pickup downstairs.
Check inventory and the reward box before requesting a replacement
The replacement condition is specific: the key must be absent from both your inventory and the reward chest. Inspect both before returning to Anna. A key still sitting in the box is an uncollected reward, while a key already carried needs to be equipped for the door interaction.
Follow this sequence:
- Inspect your character's inventory for Key from Anna.
- Return to Anna's quest reward box and open it.
- If the key is in the box, select the key itself and take it individually.
- If it is in your inventory, keep it for the rooftop cabin.
- If it is absent from both, speak to Anna again to use the current replacement-key behavior.
- Recheck the inventory before climbing the church scaffolding.
Picking the key individually follows the current quest guidance. Avoid sweeping through a reward box without checking which item you took. Once you have it, do not spend it on a different container on the way to the church roof.
If you used the key on another object and the church door is still locked, establish whether it is now absent from both places. The current reissue behavior gives you a supported next action through Anna. It does not mean every empty reward box contains a hidden second key, or that repeatedly clicking the original box will recreate one.
A successful recovery is visible: Key from Anna is available in your inventory again. The new update offers that recovery route, but an older save with additional quest registration problems may still need a report if the conversation does not produce the expected item.
Prepare the repairs before climbing
Getting the key does not rebuild the route to the rooftop cabin. Bring the Building Tool and enough materials for the damaged stairs and radio so you can finish the access work during the same trip.
Prepare these materials for the church repairs:
| Repair | Materials |
|---|---|
| Lower Wooden Stairs flight | 6 Wood |
| Upper Wooden Stairs flight | 6 Wood |
| Radio Station Bench inside the roof cabin | 3 Scrap and 4 Wood |
The two flights use 12 Wood together. Including the cabin radio brings the listed repair materials to 16 Wood and 3 Scrap. Keep those materials in your character's inventory when carrying out the repairs, and read each on-screen requirement before using them.
The Building Tool needs to be equipped for the renovation prompts. A missing repair prompt is therefore a different problem from a missing key. If you are looking at the damaged stairs with a weapon or another tool in hand, equip the Building Tool before concluding that the access route cannot be repaired.
This preparation is for the existing church structures. You do not need to build a new staircase elsewhere to replace the task, or place a new radio on the roof. Use the damaged objects associated with the active quest.
Repair the two wooden stair flights
Leave the Church and find the wooden scaffolding against its side wall. The access route contains two broken flights of Wooden Stairs. The renovation tracker shows the two repairs, and the damaged flights appear as blue outlines when you approach with the Building Tool.
Repair the lower flight first. Hold the displayed repair control, let the action finish, and check that the renovation counter advances. Climb the repaired section to reach the upper flight, then repair that one using the remaining 6 Wood.

The practical check is the existing damaged flight becoming usable and the repair objective updating. Merely placing another wooden piece beside the scaffolding is not the same renovation action. If the tracker stays at an incomplete value, inspect both original blue outlines again.
Once access is repaired, continue upward to the church roof. Cross the snow-covered roof along the wooden walkways toward the small rooftop cabin. That cabin contains the communication equipment used in Breaking the Radio Silence.
Do not confuse reaching the roof with opening the cabin. You may be standing on the correct roof while the door still requires the key. The door is the next separate check.
Equip Key from Anna and unlock the rooftop cabin
At the cabin, inspect the door prompt. It should be the locked door on the Church roof, not a loot container along the route. Equip Key from Anna before attempting the unlock interaction, then hold the displayed unlock control until it completes.

The locked prompt changes to an open prompt after the key is used. That change is the clearest feedback that the door action succeeded. The key is consumed when it unlocks the cabin, so its disappearance after this successful action is expected.
If the door remains locked, check the following without spending the key elsewhere:
- The item is actually Key from Anna.
- The key is equipped before you attempt the unlock.
- You are interacting with the rooftop cabin door.
- You hold the unlock input for the action shown on screen.
- The Journal is at the church roof stage rather than still waiting for an earlier conversation or pickup.
If the key is no longer in your inventory and the door never changed to open, inspect the reward box again before speaking with Anna for a replacement. Record what object you interacted with when it disappeared. That detail helps distinguish the known key-consumption problem from a door interaction that completed normally.
There is no supported need to force the lock with a knife, spend blueprint points on another key, or search every House Camp container. The intended route uses Anna's reward key and the rooftop door.
Confirm the radio objective after entering
Entering the cabin should move the sequence toward renovating the radio and listening to Icarus. A blue outline marks the Radio Station Bench on the desk beside the window. Equip the Building Tool and repair that existing bench with 3 Scrap and 4 Wood.
After the repair, use the bench to listen and remain until the transmission ends. The listening objective registers when the message finishes. Leaving immediately after activating the radio can leave you uncertain about whether the full interaction completed.
This is also a useful boundary for diagnosing the key issue. If you can enter the cabin and work on the radio, access through the locked door has succeeded. A remaining radio or conversation objective should be investigated at that step rather than described as a missing church key.
When the radio work is done, return to Anna inside the Church and continue the quest conversation. The later clothing reward and next-tower dialogue belong to the continuation of Breaking the Radio Silence. You do not need a second roof key to take those rewards.
Handle a key that still cannot be recovered
Install the current quest update before concluding that the older key workaround is your only option. The new behavior explicitly allows Anna to reissue a missing key when it is absent from both the inventory and the reward chest.
If you meet that condition but speaking to Anna does not restore the key, preserve the existing save and record the exact failure. Capture the active Journal objective, the empty reward box, and the relevant inventory state. Include whether you are playing solo or as the host or a guest, and who originally took or used the key.
In co-op, the host should perform main story steps. Have the host inspect the current quest and carry out the available Anna conversation and roof-door interaction. This follows the supported role assignment; it should not be presented as a guarantee that any earlier guest-triggered failure will be repaired.
A useful bug report explains whether the key was never offered, left in the reward box, taken and later lost, spent on another object, or consumed at the church door without opening it. Include your installed build if the game or launcher displays it, plus the save and logs through the developer reporting process. The successful end state for this problem is an open rooftop cabin and access to its radio, so report the precise point preventing that result.
